The Nokia brandname has taken a big fall and its still trying to find its way back. It’s tethered its return with the still unproven Windows Mobile platform – so it’s very much a big unknown at the moment. In the 90s and early 2000s, there wasn’t really any other phone but Nokia. I can’t even remember the countless number of Nokia handsets I have owned. But that’s all changed. The advent of the smartphone has diminished Nokia’s strength with the fading Symbian OS almost all but a sad memory today. Still, we couldn’t count out the giant. Nokia decided to come back but its first few tries weren’t very good. I even bought the Nokia N900 with the Maemo 5 OS. Although it wasn’t a bad phone, it wasn’t particularly great either.
We’ve been waiting for a while (not sure why its taking so long) for Nokia to launch more Lumia Smartphones, but so far its been just a sparse few models, notably the Lumia 800. While Nokia tried to launch it with fanfare, it hasn’t gained much traction. The recently announced Lumia 900 though looks more promising. 4.3” AMOLED screen, NFC, 8 megapixel camera, and 4G added should make it more appealing. I think Nokia and WM make an interesting partnership (I’m surprised Microsoft didn’t just buy Nokia) but the Windows Mobile OS is untested and I’m not sure how many people are going to take the plunge. I’ll wait to see what it looks like but it’s going to take a lot to convince me to buy one.
